The foundation mare KIRKBYS STORM GLORY – FM HSH (Storm Warning/Glen Prairie Glory – see ASHS article) bred exceptionally well with over 800 descendants in the studbook. Although she had a tough start as a drought-born poddy foal in 1964, Phillip realised her potential, admiring her sensibility and her mother’s ability to do anything and be ridden by anyone. This is a tenet imperative to the KS breeding program and evident as the broodmare WALLAH REFLECTION – HSH (ADIOS REFLECT – IS HSH/KIRKBYS STUD BREEZE – HSH), who is Storm Glory’s great-granddaughter and was a successful pony club mare for Phillip’s grandchildren, partnering with them as a 5-year-old mare. Storm Glory was bred to KIRKBYS COBALT – IS HSH, producing three foals: KIRKBYS ABALEEN – IM HSH, KIRKBYS CLOWDY – HSH, and KIRKBYS CALCIUM – HSH.
KIRKBYS ABALEEN – IM HSH
Phillip often remarked that Abaleen was “The ancestress of most of my good horses, a highly aggressive mare on tough cattle and one of the brightest and hardest horses I’ve ever had”. Abaleen was by KIRKBYS COBALT – IS HSH and out of KIRKBYS STORM GLORY – FM HSH. With three colts and five fillies among her eight progeny, she was also an excellent broodmare, with her foals being:
