I always find winter slow, not because it’s filled with rainy days in the Adelaide Hills, but because I impatiently anticipate the foals due in spring. Despite trying for more foals, the drought means we’ll only have three foals due in 2025. I am desperately hoping there are some fillies this year, as we’ve had two fillies from the last eight foals since 2022.
The first mare due, KIRKBYS STUD WHITE ROSE – HSH is by CHEVIN IVORY – HOF HSH and out of open campdraft mare, KIRKBYS STUD ROSALIE. Rosie is in foal to MILLUNGERAS MOON BEAM – HSH (by HAZELWOOD CONMAN – IS HSH and out of KIRKBYS STUD BLUE MOON – HSH), which means this foal carries a double cross of Omega, four crosses of Romeo, and nine foundation or impact ASH mares in the first four generations. Rosie has given me three colts, so this foal has to be a filly!
The second mare due to foal is KIRKBYS STUD STARDUST who is by One Stylish Pepto and out of open-winning mare, KIRKBYS STUD GLEAM. Stardust is in foal to the open-winning campdraft stallion DARMA ACRES OF VEGAS (by ACRES DESTINY – IS and out of COLWAY CRYSTAL – HSH). Crystal has been described as a super dam; she is the dam of DARMA ACRES OF IMPACT (winner of the 2013 ASHS National Maturity and the 2016 Landmark Open Campdraft), DARMA ACRES CRACKALAKIN (placed 2nd in the 2021 ASHS National Show Abbey Open and is the dam of a Beniah filly selling for $50,000 at the 2022 Nutrien Classic sale), TRINITY ADIOS OLIGO (up-and-coming stallion), and TRINITY AOC (a filly by HAZELWOOD CONGRESSMAN who sold for $35,000 at the 2022 Nutrien Classic as a 2 YO).
The last foal is from KIRKBYS STUD MARVEL – HSH who is by HAZELWOOD CONMAN – IS HSH and out of open, juvenile, and encouragement campdraft winning mare KIRKBYS STUD MIRACLE. This foal will also be by DARMA ACRES OF VEGAS (by ACRES DESTINY – IS and out of COLWAY CRYSTAL – HSH). Miracle’s dam, KIRKBYS STUD ORCHY – HSH, won 10 campdrafts and was second in the 1998 Canning Downs at Warwick and is the dam of open campdraft stallion KIRKBYS STUD ECHO – HSH. Miracle’s grand-dam is KIRKBYS STUD EPAULET – IM HSH who has been described as an Elite Campdraft Producer by Dan Redgen in his book Forty-Two Years of Elite Campdraft Breeding.
