With Dalby Australian Stock Horse Sale only a week away, I figured I should do a post on our sale horse, Kirkbys Stud Pasito. Pasito is a 3-year-old gelding by Kirkbys Stud Counterfeit and out of Wallah Eve (Warrenbri Omega x Gay Illusion). Pasito is a double cross of Omega and has the cool mindedness you’d expect.

Even though I come from a campdraft family, I didn’t have the chance to compete, so being able to have a go has been a long-held aspiration. It was my third ever campdraft start and I placed 4th in the Encouragement Draft riding Kirkbys Stud Marvel, which was a fun, and possibly addictive experience.

What a fabulous result at the ASHS National Campdraft with all three mares placing. COOLUM OVATION was Miss Consistency, especially as this is her fourth ever draft. Ovation had 7 runs for 5 gates and placed =6th in the Maiden Series and 8th in the Novice. KASPERS VERSACE won the Mare Campdraft Cutout and CLEARCHOICE CONTIKI placed 4th in the Open.

Kirkbys Stud was proud to sponsor the Stallion Campdraft in memory of my Dad, Phillip Kirkby. Dad had a passion for breeding exceptional horses, and sponsoring his memorial draft allows us to honour his legacy, especially as there were three Kirkbys Stud Prefix stallions competing—Kirkbys Stud Elvis, Kirkbys Stud Contender, and Kirkbys Stud Counterfeit.

Jess (a long time family friend) reached out to share this lovely story about Kirkbys Stud Annabelle. Jess and Alice were gifted Annabelle, a mare who’d spent time droving and as a broodmare. Now, at 22, she’s happily teaching Jess’s daughter Alice the ropes — going to Pony Camp, riding around home, and being part of the family.

A wave of genetic research published in Science has rewritten the story of horse domestication, pinpointing the biological upgrades that turned wild herding animals into the rideable powerhouses we know today. Scientists who studied over 70 horse genomes, ranging back thousands of years, traced selection to genes associated with temperament and physical strength.

New campdraft mare to the team, Coolum Ovation, made her debut at Swan Hill on the weekend, coming home with 3rd place in the Maiden B, showing plenty of style and ability for her first outing. Ovation has immense talent across disciplines, having previously played A grade Polocrosse and jumping over 1 metre.

Kaspers Versace has taken out the 2025 SCA Reserve Champion Novice Horse of the Year – a well-deserved recognition for a mare that keeps stepping up every run. Versace only competed for half the SCA season and missed the Championship by half a point, and is now an Open winning mare—a testament to her and David Murphy’s consistent partnership.

I always find winter slow, not because it’s filled with rainy days in the Adelaide Hills, but because I impatiently anticipate the foals due in spring. Despite trying for more foals, the drought means we’ll only have three foals due in 2025. I am desperately hoping there are some fillies this year, as we’ve had two fillies from the last eight foals since 2022.
